DEFINITION:
Under general supervision, organizes, implements, coordinates, promotes, supervises, and evaluates areas of one or more programs within the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department.
Programs may include, but are not limited to sports and aquatics, youth services, senior center, cultural arts, and special events; performs other duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Community Services Coordinator I The Community Services Coordinator I is the entry-level classification in the community services series that allows the incumbent to develop journey level knowledge and abilities.
Initially, under immediate supervision, incumbents perform the more routine community services work while learning City policies and procedures.
As experience is gained, there is greater independence of action within established guidelines.
This classification is distinguished from the next higher level classification of Community Services Coordinator II by the performance of work requiring a lesser degree of program oversight and implementation.
Community Services Coordinator II The Community Services Coordinator II is the journey level class responsible for assisting with and planning a variety of program content and overseeing the daily operations of one or more on-site or off-site, City recreation related programs and activities.
Generally, this class works with several recreation programs, assists with and prepares a specific program budget for assigned program(s), and keeps the public informed of current programs and activities.
This classification is distinguished from the next higher level of Community Services Supervisor in that the latter has responsibility for overseeing an entire Division within the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:
Community Services Coordinator IReceives immediate supervision from a Community Services Supervisor or a Community Services Manager.
Incumbents in this class do not routinely exercise supervision.
Community Services Coordinator IIReceives general supervision from a Community Services Supervisor or a Community Services Manager.
May exercise functional or technical supervision over volunteers, seasonal, or part-time staff.
Examples of Duties
Essential Functions:
(include but are not limited to the following) Accepts responsibility for organizing, implementing, coordinating, promoting, supervising, and evaluating areas of one or more City community services programs, such as the sports and aquatics, youth services, senior center, cultural arts, and special events.
Develops, coordinates, and implements one or more areas of assigned programs; oversees activities for participants in programs; provides supervision to program participants; assists participants with referral services.
Plans program content; develops calendars; reviews plans with a supervisor/manager; sets up for and cleans up after program activities; researches new program ideas; prepares program schedules, which may include scheduling ball fields, swim lessons, field trips, and classes.
Depending on assigned program area, completes accident and incident reports; follows up with parents when necessary; speaks with parents regarding their concerns and complaints; maintains records of program attendance.
Hires, trains, schedules, supervises, and evaluates training personnel, including overseeing and communicating with instructors of various classes offered through the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department; reviews and verifies time cards.
Responds to public inquiries about assigned projects and programs made by telephone, correspondence or during public meetings; ensures excellent customer service is given at the City's program sites and in various programs offered by the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department.
Develops brochures, flyers, and other promotional materials; collects information to be posted on the City's Website; orders equipment and supplies; prepares purchase orders and demands.
Attends various meetings pertinent to assigned areas of responsibility; organizes, attends, and gives training necessary for assigned area.
Prepares invoices for field rentals, tournaments, and facility rentals; depending on area of assignment.
Acts as a liaison with various community groups and commissions.
Organizes, plans, and works department wide special events and events specific to area of assignment.
Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, State/ local agencies, City management and staff, and the public.
OTHER DUTIES:
(include but are not limited to the following) May perform grant research and participate in writing grants.
May prepare agendas and take minutes at various meetings.
Assists in the organization, implementation, and evaluation of rules and procedures; assists with the development of assigned area's budget; may collect fees at program locations.
May be exposed to confidential and privileged information during the course of duties, which should be maintained as such.
Performs other related duties as required.
PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities.
The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination in keeping records and preparing reports using a computer keyboard.
Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading written reports and work related documents and acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal service.
The need to lift, drag, and push files, paper, and equipment weighing 25 pounds or more is also required.
The incumbent may be exposed to fumes, dust, and air contaminants.
In addition, the incumbent may be exposed to chemicals, electrical and mechanical hazards, and loud noise when maintaining the pool.
Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold.

Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for a Community Services Coordinator I/II.
A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess the equivalent of:
Community Services Coordinator ISome work experience providing service to different segments of the public, preferably involving recreation programs, and a bachelor's degree in recreation, public administration, or a related field.
In addition to the above, one year of community services experience equivalent to that of a Community Services Coordinator I in the City of Whittier.
License/Certificate:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver's license.
Possession of or ability to obtain the following certifications may be required depending on assignment:
American Red Cross Certificate in Lifeguard Training; American Red Cross CPR Certificate for the Professional Rescuer; American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certificate; American Heart Association Automatic External Defibrillator; California Administrative Code Title 22 First Aid training must be taken within one year of hire.

Supplemental Information Medical:
Applicants will be required as a prerequisite to employment to successfully pass a physical examination, including a drug screen, the cost of which will be paid by the City.
Selection/Exam Process:
The person selected will be expected to perform all the functions of the position.
