ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT, CIVIL & MECHANICAL DESIGN SECTION, MECHANICAL DESIGN GROUP, JOINT ADMINISTRATION OFFICE, WHITTIER NOTE:

Essential Functions:
To use Computer Aided Design (CAD) technology to perform increasingly more difficult conceptual design layouts and to prepare and maintain construction plans and engineering-related drawings, 3D laser scan extractions, 3D/BIM models, and sketches in the discipline of mechanical design.

Summary:
The Mechanical Design team aims to develop a positive work environment marked by the shared belief that the group can move forward most effectively when collaboration and cooperation are at the center of thinking, planning, and decision making.
The CAD Drafter/Designer works with the project design team to prepare accurate models and contract drawings of existing conditions and proposed layouts for construction purposes.

Under the general supervision of a Supervising Designer and the technical direction of Project Designers and Engineers, the incumbent will:
Develop conceptual, preliminary, and final drawings from various notes, sketches, descriptions, or other sources using CAD systems or GIS Prepare layouts of existing conditions utilizing in-house record drawings, surveys, CAD files, point clouds and image files Perform drafting duties involving mechanical plans, sections, isometrics, and details Prepare contract drawings including plans, profiles, cross sections, graphic illustrations, and maps Create miscellaneous diagrams and figures including P&ID's MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Candidates must possess:
A valid California Class C driver license AND- DESIGNER I:
One (1) year of experience performing CAD and/or GIS related work -OR- completion of two related courses (at least 6 semester units) from an accredited college or university in Engineering Design Drafting or GIS DESIGNER II:
Three (3) years of experience performing duties equivalent to a Designer I.
Completion of related courses from an accredited college or university in Engineering Design Drafting or GIS may be substituted for some/up to 1.
5 years of required experience where 12 semester units is equivalent to one year of experience and a maximum of 18 semester units may be substituted for 1.
5 years of experience DESIGNER III:
Two (2) years of Districts' experience performing the duties of a Designer II -OR- five (5) years of outside experience performing advanced level design work DESIRABLE
Qualifications:
Team-oriented, self-motivated, and flexible.
Ability to effectively communicate with staff, contractors, and consultants.
Strong organizational, analytical, communication and interpersonal skills.
Knowledge of:
2D and 3D mechanical/piping design experience and knowledge of MicroStation, OpenPlant, Edgewise, and Descartes software 3D modeling Databases Surveys Trigonometry Plan and profile design and drafting EXAMPLES OF ASSESSMENT CRITERIA The competitive selection process may cover:
Knowledge of:
Advanced principles of engineering design Advanced techniques, methods and equipment used in specialized design and layout Principles of sanitary landfill, sewer system and treatment plant construction Civil and Mechanical systems Engineering principles and calculations used in the applicable discipline Engineering mathematics Nomenclature, symbols, techniques and instruments used in engineering design and layout Verification process for as-built field conditions Applicable building and engineering codes in the assigned area of specialization Ability to:
Design and layout a segment of a complex engineering project Perform CAD work and basic conceptual design layout for segments of engineering design projects Make technical calculations Translate verbal ideas and sketches into preliminary through final drawings and engineering plans Perform complex mapping, moderately difficult initial concept, and detailed design work Analyze field engineering data ADDITIONAL INFORMATION SELECTION PROCESS:
All applications will be reviewed to determine if the conditions and qualifications for testing are met.
Candidates considered to have the best qualifications will be invited to the written examination.
The selection process will consist of a written test weighted at 40%, and an interview weighted at 60%.
Candidates must receive a qualifying score on each selection component to move forward in the selection process.
The written exam for the first round of qualified applicants will take place on March 16.
The interviews are tentatively scheduled for the week of March 27.
